Equine Surgery Residency

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University offers a three year surgical residency in Large Animal Surgery. The program is designed to provide clinical and academic training to fulfill American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) requirements and prepare the resident for board certification and a career in academic or private referral practice.

The successful candidate will complete 90% of their clinical service obligations in the equine section and 10% in the Livestock Services section over the course of the training program. The resident is expected to participate in all aspects of equine and food animal clinical surgical and medical services including primary and referral emergency surgical and intensive care duty. Responsibilities will include night and weekend emergency duties on a rotating schedule. The resident is expected to assume primary care of hospitalized patients on specified weekends and holidays. In addition to management of the hospitalized patients, the resident will provide clinical, didactic and laboratory instruction for veterinary students and participate in continuing education programs. With demonstrated progress in the program, the resident will be assigned increasing clinical and instructional responsibility. Enrollment in the graduate school and completion of a program of study leading to the Master of Science degree is optional and requires prior approval.

Resident candidates are selected through the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians (AAVC) Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP). Information about position availability, program descriptions and forms needed to apply can be found at the VIRMP web site.
