Program Details
The Veterinary Nurse Internship Program is a one year post graduate rotating small animal internship designed to give new graduates experience in an academic environment, training with experienced Registered Veterinary Nurses and boarded veterinary specialists.
Learning Opportunities

- Junior Surgery Lab
Elective service options include:
- Dermatology
- Oncology
- Exotics/Zoo Medicine
- Pet Health Center (Primary Care)
- Ophthalmology
- Shelter Medicine (Mobile Spay and Neuter Surgery Unit)
- Dentistry
- Large animal elective options during the internship year
- Equine Internal Medicine and Surgery
- Livestock Services (In-House)
- Ultrasound
- Urgent Care
Intern Curriculum
Completion of specific objectives relative to each rotation is required. Objectives are designed to offer a complete and well-rounded experience, including mastery of select advanced skills. Interns attend six house officer seminars throughout the internship year. Additional requirements include obtaining Fear Free Certification (level 1) within the internship year.
Interns will participate in three Small Animal Emergency or Small Animal ICU open shifts per month. There will be large animal experiences when on the anesthesia, ophthalmology, junior surgery lab and radiology rotations, as these services cover both small and large animal procedures.
Experiences outside the hospital will include the opportunity to travel to area zoos with the Exotic Pets and Zoological Medicine Service, to area shelters with the Shelter Medicine Service and the Kansas State Fair Birthing Center.

Optional service to visit while on large animal rotation:
- Exotics/Zoo Medicine
Intern Curriculum

Interns attend six house officer seminars that are all large animal oriented throughout the internship year. Additional requirements include Equine Fear-Free Certification and Beef Quality Assurance Certification within the internship year. Participation in the Kansas State Fair Birthing Center will also be a requirement.
There will be small animal experiences when working on radiology, ophthalmology and anesthesia. Experiences outside of the hospital will include equine and livestock services field service rotations. Additionally, while on equine reproduction you will visit the K-State Horse Unit regularly. Other off-site areas may include, but are not limited to: the K-State Sheep and Goat Unit, K-State Dairy Unit, K-State Purebred Unit and K-State Stocker Unit.
